A checklist of photosynthetic Euglenophytes (Euglenophyta, Euglenophyceae) from the Philippines
Abstract
Results of an inventory of photosynthetic euglenophytes (Euglenophyta, Euglenophyceae) from the Philippines are presented. A total of 80 species/varieties are recorded with the majority of the collected materials determined to species level. The list includes nine genera, i.e., Colacium, Cryptogelena, Euglena, Euglenaformis, Lepocinclis, Monomorphina, Phacus, Strombomonas, and Trachelomonas. The most number of species belonged to Trachelomonas, followed in decreasing order by Phacus, Euglena, Lepocinclis, Strombomonas, Euglenaformis, and with one taxon each for Colacium, Cryptoglena, and Monomorphina. Of these taxa, eight species and varieties are first reported from the Philippines. All the euglenoids were observed in fresh water habitats. Majority are unicellular/solitary with the flagellated motile cell as the dominant phase in their life cycle. Colacium is the only genus that is made up of a group of immobile cells that are united in amorphous or dendroid palmelloid colonies.
