Abstract

Nostoc commune Vaucher, a cyanobacterium, is widely promoted for human food due to its health benefits hence studies on how to cultivate and propagate this organism in a clean, laboratory-controlled environment are actively pursued. In this study, the effect of supplementary carbon dioxide and agitation on the growth of Nostoc commune was examined. Four different culture conditions were set up: I) unshaken with ambient air; II) unshaken with 1.5% CO2-enriched air; III) shaken with ambient air; and IV) shaken with 1.5% CO2-enriched air. Results showed that setup II exhibited the greatest increase in fresh weight after one month incubation, followed in decreasing order by setups III, IV, and I. There was a maximum of 195% increase in fresh weight in setup II over setup I. Additional record on the positive linear relationship between the fresh weight and the diameter of a N. commune colony was also established.
